Microsoft TechEd 2013 New Orleans Recap

Steven Rupp at Microsoft TechEdWell, here we are and already eight months have flown by so quickly since my first day. Having had a great time on the West coast at SPTechCon San Francisco, I was ready for the next event I could attend with! My next venture led me to the great city of New Orleans for Microsoft TechEd North America. This was also my first time visiting New Orleans.

Boy, was I in for a treat! Where else can you enjoy a delicious, warm, sugary beignet and talk SharePoint? I quickly learned that Missouri is not half as bad when it comes to being humid. Saying New Orleans can be hot and very muggy is an understatement, but the food and the people are worth the visit.

They may say that New York is the city that never sleeps, but there is always something going on in New Orleans day or night. On every street you could hear a jazz band playing and see people dancing. Outside of my room, you could hear the trolley bustling by every 30 minutes or so. Each night, our team would go out to eat and it would mean trying something new every time. At first it was clams…..which I couldn’t muster up the courage to do. But, when the Alligator came, it was on and it was pretty good!

And while culinary treats are always a great time, we didn’t eat and run throughout the city the entire time. I know what you’re thinking, what about the conference, Steve?!

Microsoft Tech Ed definitely hit my top three lists for conferences to re-attend. There was something new to explore at every turn – you truly needed all week to take everything in. They had areas for hands-on labs, seminars, lounges, luncheons, certification testing centers, community activities, and more. We had great conversations around our Hosted SharePoint Solutions and the specific benefits of taking SharePoint to the private cloud.

In particular, I am finding out more and more that the question on everyone’s mind is “What is unique about compared to all of the other providers?” This is a great question, and one I love to answer. It is definitely the right question to ask when first meeting a hosting provider. So, what makes us unique you may ask? We are unique because we are unmatched in SharePoint hosting expertise, customer service and our 24/7/365 support.

In addition to asking a hosting provider what makes them unique, there are several other questions that we recommend everyone ask because there are many options out there and even more factors that will impact your decision. Because, when you need them most, you should have no concerns about whether or not your hosting provider will deliver excellent service.

As a member of the sales team here at, I understand the importance of research before choosing a company to host your SharePoint environment. Not only do I enjoy answering hosted SharePoint questions, I also love to share the questions that we believe all companies should ask their hosting provider before making a decision, including:

  • What is your support availability?
  • How much control do I have over my servers?
  • Can I see your SLA? Is it financially backed?
  • How secure is your data center(s)? Which data center will our environment reside in?

Any my favorite…..

  • How long have you been hosting SharePoint? (Or the application you’re looking to have hosted) How much of your company is focused on SharePoint?

Download a copy of our free eBook for the full list of questions that you should ask EVERY hosting provider.

All-in-all, I had a great time. Unfortunately, I missed the closing ceremony at the Superdome with surprise appearances by Drew Brees and Tina Turner. But, I hope everyone had a blast! I definitely didn’t miss out on getting my two new heavily discounted Surfaces ;)! I hope to see you all at the next conference and don’t hesitate to drop by and chit-chat.  We’re here to answer your questions.
