SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 2 Has Arrived

SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 2 has been officially released to the public by Microsoft as of July 17, 2013. The most recent Service Pack had been in beta since April and many of us have been either patiently or, more likely, impatiently waiting for it.

As I am sure all of us Administrator are aware, a Service Pack includes all the cumulative updates that have been released since Service Pack 1. The following list – brought to you by – gives a pretty clear idea of what to expect from the latest Service Pack.

Major Fixes to Expect from SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 2

Well, since Service Pack 1, there have been many other major updates to the Microsoft suite of products. These include Office 2013, Internet Explorer 10, and Windows 8. SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 2 resolves the irritating compatibility issues we have experienced with these other products.

How many of you have had issues using SharePoint 2010 in Internet Explorer 10?

If you are avid readers of our blog, you may have read Jesse Roche’s temporary work around for these issues in his Problems with SharePoint and Internet Explorer 10 post.

In addition to resolving a variety of compatibility issues, Service Pack 2 also “addresses security, stability, and performance” issues.

Where can I download Service Pack 2?

The direct download link from Microsoft can be found here.

You can also download and install the update through the Microsoft Updates. This will show up in the optional updates section for 90-days. It will then become an automatic update.

In addition to Service Pack 2 for SharePoint 2010, Microsoft has released a plethora of Service Pack 2’s for a wide variety of software packages. Some of these software packages are related to SharePoint, such as:

  • FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint SP2
  • Office Web Apps 2010 SP2
  • Project Server SP2
  • Search Server 2010 SP2
  • SharePoint Designer 2010 SP2
  • SharePoint 2010 Indexing Connector for Documentum SP2
